Who is Gaudi?
|
Who is Gaudi? Antoni Gaudi lived from 1852-1926 and met his death in the manner in which he lived: strangely. He was run over by a tram. He was an architect and artist who constructed very non-conformist buildings. He belongs to the Spanish Modernism movement, which was a contribution to the Jugendstil or Art Nouveau. He was able to materialise his works with the help of the textile magnate Guëll. He became very famous as a result of this, but also because of his special mixture of neo-styles. These express a typical atmosphere and were quite unique. In 1878 he graduated in Barcelona and remained in the city. He was lucky in that this city was then in full expansion. What also contributed enormously to his fame, was his openness to styles and values which were not Spanish.

He designed and executed many works outside of Barcelona, such as the interior of the Majorcan cathedral. After all, he was famous as an interior designer. Some well-known works in Barcelona can be viewed at the Park Guëll and the Sagrada Familia, Casa Mila (La Pedrera) and Casa Battlo.
