Venice

The Venetian gondolas, St. Mark's Square, the Rialto Bridge, the Basilica, dozens of palaces, the Bridge of Sighs and Doge's Palace are only a few reasons to visit this city. It is the combination of Venice's cultural and architectural riches and its unique location that make the city so popular with tourists.

There are no cars. The main road is a canal, so the best means of transport is a boat. In Venice, public transport, taxis and ambulances are all boats, but they move in the same chaotic fashion as the cars in all the other big Italian cities. Venice itself consists of 120 islands, which are connected to each other by 150 canals and 400 bridges.

Visitors of Venice should find a place to stay in the city itself to best enjoy its unique atmosphere. A walk through the many small streets really shows you how the Venetians live. This guide discusses the main points of interest, the carnival, Venetian glass and includes many tips and links.

Eat yourself poor in Venice
In Venice, eating is so expensive. We knew that we‘d better avoid the terraces on the San Marco square and therefore we chose a little side street. The tourist menu looked attractive: Bratwurst with Fries. For 15 euros without drinks, we received a small hot sausage with exactly 12 French fries. Thank God we spent only one day in Venice. Next time, we’ll eat plenty at breakfast to avoid a lunch in the town of Venice.

Venice doesn’t want to see bare flesh
In Italy, the dress code requires a minimum of modesty when you visit church or other public buildings, even when the temperature goes over 30°C in the shade. Venice has taken the concept one step further and now you can’t even walk around without a shirt or rest along the canals. According to certain sources, you can’t even eat your sandwich on the street. But where then?
