Rhine
In this holiday file we explore the German Rhine between Düsseldorf and Rüdesheim. This is the part that everybody calls the 'Romantic Rhine', so expect a lot of tourists. There is no industrial activity on this part of this powerful river. You will find vineyards, castles and pleasant towns. We present the tourist spots in cities such as Düsseldorf, Cologne, Bonn, Königswinter, Koblenz and Rüdesheim. The Romantic Rhine is also a place of folk tales and legends. The most famous legend is probably the Loreley. Another one is the Mouse Tower. We will tell you a few. The biggest event is 'Rhine in Flames'. We will give you dates and venues.
Complement the beautiful countryside and romance of this part of the Rhine with a delicious glass of regional wine for a relaxing holiday. Or do you prefer making an effort? Then we also have some tips for you. Curious?

Köln is a dead city on Sundays
We enjoy animation and a nice atmosphere, but unfortunately Köln is a dead city on Sundays. Only the museums are open and even most of the restaurants are closed.

Christmas Market in Köln
Almost trampled to the ground on the Christmas Market in Köln. Awful, but it was my fault, I had brushed aside all the warnings. Köln on the last Saturday before Christmas is absolutely chaotic. If you don’t go with the flow of people, you risk being trampled to the ground. Apparently the first Saturday, usually at the end of November, it’s perfectly feasible.

Sales period are not fixed in Germany
Here the summer sales begin on the first days of June. So we went to Düsseldorf round mid-July thinking that they would also be busy with sales. But we were wrong. In Germany, they apparently are free to decide when to start, some cities start around mid-July, others wait till the end of July. The tourist bureaus know about it and will thus be able to inform you. The German word for sales is ‘saisonausverkauf’.
