Portugal North
While Portugal remains undervalued as a holiday country, central Portugal is a trove of outstanding treasures. Since the area is not too crowded with tourists, savvy travellers can enjoy a pleasant and relaxing stay. Portugal, especially in its central areas, has something for everyone: superb architecture, wonderful azulejos, enchanting landscapes, mouth-watering local specialities, charming music, calm villages, pleasant human-scale cities, a coastline that’s always close, mild temperatures, many impressive monuments, some are which are included in the world heritage list of Unesco.

Fatima on the 14th of May or September
We were staying by chance in the Fatima area between the 12th and the 14th of September. We saw people walking along the road with backpacks. We felt like we were in a third world country. By chance we had planned a visit to Fatima on the 14th of September. It appeared that it was one of the two main pilgrimage days; the other is on the 14th of May. These people along the roads were thus clearly pilgrims. Parking was quite difficult but the human sea on the square was really impressive. First we went for lunch and when we came back to the square to visit the basilica, only a few souls were still there. It looked as if everyone had been swept away by a storm. Incredible!

The area around Porto is beautiful
I mean that in Porto there is not much to see or to do. When you have seen the Port houses on the docks (very commercial) and the old city centre with the cathedral, you have pretty much seen everything. But the area holds many treasures: Braga and its cathedral, Guimaraes with its castle, Villa Real with its Mateus domain and then the unforgettable Bom Jesus. Highly recommended!
