Madrid
Madrid is the capital of Spain, but from a tourism point of view, it may appear that Barcelona has the edge. This is not the case in reality. Madrid offers a more exciting nightlife, it boasts the largest museum, cosier squares, and the city is famous for shopping. The Prado Museum is a real concept in itself and it should certainly feature on your list of places to visit. In addition, Madrid can also be very proud of its Reina Sofia Art Museum and Thyssen-Bornemisza collection. Furthermore, you can take a break from all your sightseeing in the extremely large and beautiful Parque del Retiro.
Everything is in place to ensure that tourists can enjoy their stay. You can hop onto the tour buses or use the well-connected underground network to take you to the magnificent squares. Plaza Mayor or the Main Square will act as your landmark, Puerta del Sol is the heart of the city, and Plaza de Cibeles is the astonishing square with the famous fountain.
The largest flea market in Spain, all the department stores and fashion shops are concentrated in two streets, and the appealingly cosy old shops are located in the old city centre. This is shopping in Madrid. You can also visit the city for just one day as the city has a direct link with the airport. Or would you prefer a night out in this metropolis? Most of the nightlife takes place on the squares.
And if that is still not enough, Madrid also boasts two formidable tourist attractions within a radius of 50-75 km from the city. Firstly, there is Toledo with its magnificent cathedral, and the El Escorial monastery which looks more like a palace.

Madrid: hot as hell in August
If you want to know how hot hell is, just try Madrid in August. Every day temperatures above 35 degrees C° in the shade and at night they hardly go down. And don’t think that there’s air-conditioning everywhere, because that’s not the case. We wanted to go to Toledo but they discouraged us, apparently it was even hotter there.

The Royal Palace is sometimes closed
According to the travelling guides, the Royal Palace in Madrid is something not to miss. When we prepared our city trip to Madrid, we had checked on the website and planned it in our trip. We you decided to visit, it appeared to be closed because of the official visit of an important guest. We did not see on the website that it would be closed on that day. Since we had planned it for our last day, there was nothing more we could do. THUS always plan your visit for your first day, if it’s closed you can always try the day after.
