London: tips
London

London has always been a top tourist destination and they are doing everything they can to keep it that way. Only recently they opened the Tate Modern, the London Eye and the Millennium Bridge. There have also been a number of huge renovation projects, such as the one in the British Museum. Did you know a visit to London need not necessarily be expensive? Entry to no less than 13 of the biggest museums is free, no conditions attached, including the Tate Modern, the National Gallery and the British Museum.

In this extensive fact file we have divided London into eight areas. In each we explore an area of the city in detail. You will discover all you need to know about the Beefeaters and the black raven of the Tower. We also give tips on how to avoid the queues at Madame Tussaud's and many other museums.

Needless to say, there is information to be found on English pubs and Afternoon Teas. And there are plenty of tips about shopping in London and its bustling nightlife. London is also a city of traditions, such as the changing of the guard. It is a green city too, with large parks in the city centre. Our fact file covers all of this as well. The heart of London is only 2 hours and 40 minutes from Brussels on the Eurostar, so what is there to hold you back?

We have divided London into eight areas. In each we start and end at an underground station. These eight walks cover all of the city’s major tourist attractions. And each of the visits we suggest contains enough information for you to forgo the walk and plan your day yourself.

The Metro: not for the elderly
My parents, both in their seventies, wanted to visit London. The trip with the Eurostar started like a dream and it was so nice to see the happiness on my parents’ faces. When we decided to take the metro to reach the hotel that was just too much. The metro lies deeper than what we are used to in Paris. The agitation and the walk from one escalator to another did not suit them. When they arrived at the hotel, they were exhausted. From then on, we always took the taxi and we would recommend it. You arrive more rapidly to your destination (incredible with all these traffic jams), it doesn’t cost that much, there were 4 of us anyway, and most of all my parents found it so cool, so typically British. For weeks after, my parents could not stop talking about that trip to London. It goes to show that every problem has its solution and that it doesn’t need to be expensive.

Disappointed by Chinatown
What was supposed to be the high point of our 3rd trip to London was very disappointing. We wanted to eat Chinese-style but this is merely an average food factory. After having walked through the neighbourhood twice looking for a nice place, we thought that we had found something good, but the tables were disgusting, and the staff unfriendly. We were supposed to gulp down our food to leave the place to other clients. London is beautiful but the food is always disappointing so we usually stick to fast-food places.
