Shopping tips

When it comes to shopping in London many people think of Harrods luxury department store. Indeed, this is a place you really must visit, and the fresh food department in particular is a real revelation. You don’t have to buy anything, it’s an attraction in itself, and that’s why we have included it on our walks. You can buy anything you might need in life, from the cradle to the grave.

A cheaper equivalent to Harrods is Selfridges in Oxford Street. You can buy everything here too, only at cheaper prices. Selfridges is also the ideal place for a quick bite to eat, almost every floor has its own restaurant or snackbar. And with this we have arrived in the most famous shopping street in London: Oxford Street. This is a long street with well-known sidestreets, such as Regent Street, which leads to Piccadilly Circus and houses the largest toy shop in the world (Hamleys).

The well-known Carnaby Street (trendy shops) is a side street of Regent Street. If you have a little more time to spare and a taste for expensive clothing you will find Burberry’s on the Haymarket. There are more exclusive shops to be found on New Bond Street, that other sidestreet of Oxford Street. Another place you really must visit is Covent Garden, for the 'alternative' shops.

The shops are open on Saturday afternoons but everything closes on Sunday (except for a few shopping streets in December). Christmas shopping starts midway through November. The winter sales start on 27/12.

Clothes sizes
In Great-Britain clothes sizes are labelled in both systems at tourist locations. Shoe size 5 equates to a 37, size 8 to a 42, but an 8.5 also equates to a 42. So the English shoe sizes are more precise than the sizes we use. Clothing sizes are more complicated and it is always best to try them on in the fitting room.
