Gastronomy in Catalonia
|
Gastronomy in Catalonia Catalans love good food. Breakfast is rather limited, but this is typical of Mediterranean countries. Lunch is only eaten from 2pm onwards and in the evening no restaurant will open before 8pm. If people are hungry in between these two meals, they simply pop into a bar to have some Tapas. Tapas are a mixture of small dishes, which can be eaten at the bar. There are many variations to cater for the large numbers of tourists. Normally the tapas are available on the bar. You can eat as much as you want and your bill is calculated based on the amount of cocktail sticks used! Some establishments now offer tapas as a main meal, so you make your selection from the menu. For Spanish people tapas are like an in-between snack or as a pre-dinner snack to be eaten with a drink. This is why you usually won’t find any tapas after 8 pm.

Barcelona is situated on the coast, so there is no lack of fish on the menu. Those among you who love calamari or octupus will certainly find something to their liking. The menu will also most certainly offer a traditional paella in all its variations. Fish dishes are certainly not cheap, but you will find exclusive recipes and types of fish. All specialist fish restaurants are located in the Passeig Joan de Borbo along the Port Vell yacht marina. The Port Olympic gets very busy at night. This area boasts some 50 restaurants, ranging from Mc Donald’s to good fish restaurants or a Pizza Hut. Anyone can spend the evening or night here, as the casino and smaller discos have also established themselves here. Some of these restaurants are real eating factories, but there are also some cosy eating establishments. Just take the time to wander along the two quays before deciding and do not allow yourself to be badgered by pushy restaurant salesmen.
