Damme, a romantic town – tips and points of interest

The walk 'Around the Walls of Damme' is the best way to explore the outskirts of Damme. It is 4 km long and takes you along the south canal. A description and route map is available from the Damme tourist office. Caution: during the winter months the tourist office is closed on Saturday and Sunday mornings! Read more: www.damme.be

The walk takes you past the big mill by the canal. There is also a city walk that takes you to Damme's major points of interest. The most important sights are the following:

 Town hall
The town hall was built at the end of the 15th century in Brabant gothic style and is a symbol of enormous wealth. A visit to the town hall takes you to the council chamber, the great hall and the 'Vierschaere' hall.

 Church of Our Lady
Inside the church you can see Jacob van Maerlant's tomb. Your entry ticket also gives you access to the square tower which offers a lovely view of the town.

Till Eulenspiegel Museum and Visitor Centre
This museum and visitor centre are located in a 13th century building called 'De Grote Sterre', which also houses the VVV tourist office and a literary museum. The visitor centre in this historical building provides information about the natural environment in and around Damme. The literary museum focuses on Till Eulenspiegel and Jacob van Maerlant.

 St. John's Hospital
St. John's Hospital was reportedly founded as early as the first half of the 13th century. The chapel and museum are open to visitors. The museum shows Flemish furniture, paintings, ceramics and liturgical objects.

 Book Village
A few years ago around 10 bookshops were opened in Damme. Every second Sunday of the month an outdoor book fair is held.

Boat trip to Damme with the 'Lamme Goedzak'
Would you like to go on a boat trip between Damme and Bruges?
