Copenhagen offers the city tripper a huge variety of activities. It is a peaceful city located by the waterside and in plenty of greenery. Probably the most photographed image is that of the little mermaid, after the tale by Hans Christian Andersen. He is one of Copenhagen’s best-known personages and is about to have a theme park devoted to him in the outskirts of the city. Another amusement park with a big name lies right in the centre: Tivoli.
But perhaps you aren’t visiting Copenhagen for its theme parks. This city has plenty of other things to offer, such as 50 or so museums. Choosing between them is no easy matter - from a hypermodern museum to a museum of eroticism, from a war museum to a library of unique manuscripts, or from a design museum to the National museum of Danish History. The Copenhagen Card gives you free entry to many of these, or a discount at the door.
Copenhagen is also a city with plenty of greenery, and there is even a botanical garden to visit. Denmark has a royal house with traditions, such as the changing of the guard. This spectacle can be viewed every day at Amalienborg palace. It will have come to your attention that a short weekend break is not long enough to explore Copenhagen fully. Take at least 2 full days to visit the highlights, and, of course, to enjoy the Strøget shopping street.
Since Copenhagen’s immediate surroundings also have a great deal to offer we suggest two trips in different directions. The good train service means you don’t have to use your own car. In the north you can visit the house of Blixen (Out of Africa), the magnificent port town of Helsingor, and Kronborg Castle. To the west we have Roskilde, a Viking town with a beautiful cathedral, and, of course, a Viking museum.
