Berlin

Berlin has had a turbulent history and the city still shows plenty of signs of this. The Brandenburger Tower is probably the symbol of its unsettled past, with the Reichstag in the background. However, the new Holocaust monument, the House at Checkpoint Charlie and the new Potsdamer Square are part and parcel of these reminders.

Berlin is a green city despite its population of more than 3 million. There is even a huge park in the heart of the city, known as the Tiergarten. With so many Berliners around there are bound to plenty of shopping opportunities, and the Kurfürstendamm is like music to a shopper’s ears.

There is certainly no shortage of museums in Berlin. There are about 150 offering exhibitions on all kinds of themes. In this city trip fact file we present a few of most notable ones. Nor is there a shortage of castles, historical buildings and monuments in this city. We even suggest a trip beyond the city limits to visit a few of the most beautiful castles in Germany.

Berlin is alive! It is a multicultural city in which young and old of all outlooks and convictions are bound to feel at home. Events are held continuously and there is a surfeit of theatres and cinema complexes. In brief, there is no such thing as boredom in Berlin.

New museum in Berlin: the DDR museum
Tip: visit the new DDR museum. In the Mauermuseum, you’ll realize how people wanted to flee to West Germany. In this museum, you’ll discover how life used to be in East-Germany. Everything is visually well presented. The DDR museum

Don’t miss the Mauermuseum in Berlin
I was for two days in Berlin and it was difficult to choose between the many different museums and attractions. What you must absolutely see is the Mauermuseum, on the former site of Checkpoint Charlie, impressive and compelling. This museum will forever remain on my mind.

A cheap view on Berlin
If you want to have a cheap view on the city of Berlin, there are lots of possibilities. The Fernsehturm is expensive (8.50 euros in 2007), the Reichstag does not provide a complete view and has long queues. The Siegessäule is only 2.20 euros for the entrance and from there you can see just as much. Furthermore, the Siegessäule has a more central location, in the Tiergarten section.
