 Shopping tips

Barcelona is Spain’s most prosperous city, so it goes without saying that it is a good city to go shopping. As is always the case in Barcelona, everything centres around the Plaça de Catalunya. This square boasts one of the three El Corte Inglés shopping centres. The others are located along the Avenida Diagonal. It is in fact a large department store with all sorts of different counters. You simply have to see it.

The Av. del Portal de l'Angel is a very important shopping street, and this is where another part of El Corte Inglés is located, next to a series of boutiques (shoes and fashion). The Ramblas is also good for shopping. Here you will find market stalls selling birds and flowers, and the last section is dedicated to artists trying to sell their works of art. However, the main shopping attraction is the indoor food market, La Boqueria, which is more than worth a visit. Your eyes will simply not be able to take in everything there is to see in this lively and colourful market.

The Av. Diagonal has also been turned into a shopping street. This is mainly home to expensive and exclusive fashion and interior decor shops. You will come across these shops when you head in a western direction from the Plaça de Joan Carles I. And last but not least, the harbour has gained a brand new shopping centre, the Maremagnum. Department stores, shopping centres and shops open at 10 am and stay open as late as 8 pm. Only the smaller shops will close for a midday break until 4 pm.
