Andalusia: Costa de Almeria
|
The Costa de Almeria sounds a lot more familiar because of its large beaches, which tend to be more peaceful than those at the Costa del Sol. Almeria is the biggest city of the area and has many points of interest and things to do. The most famous seaside resort is probably Roquetas de Mar with a beautiful sandy beach and promenade. Other points of interest are the Costa de Almeria's nature reserve and the white city of Mojacar. Almeria Almeria is dominated by an enormous Moorish fortress, the Alcazaba. It was the last bulwark of Moorish occupation at the end of the Reconquista. Another peculiarity of the city is the cave dwellings in the La Chanca district or perhaps you prefer visiting the cathedral. It was built on the location of a former mosque and now looks like a fortified stronghold. This is because the city was attacked by Berbers several times. Almeria has more than 180,000 inhabitants and is therefore ideal for shopping, going out for dinner or enjoying a drink on a terrace.

Mojacar Mojacar is a small white village with newly developed beach facilities, hotels and apartments. You can also find beaches in Garrucha a bit further along the coast. The white village has a beautiful location on the side of a mountain and offers stunning views. In the summer, the village loses some of its authenticity as all the tourists arrive. A walk through the centre is definitely worthwhile. Parque natural de Cabo de Gata A unique nature reserve along the coast with great diversity: volcanic rocks, coves, salt swamps, sand dunes and sandy beaches. You can go scuba diving or catch some rays at the seaside resort of San José. The volcanic rock formations are best seen from the lighthouse. If you want to make the most of your visit to the nature reserve, make sure to go to the Centro de Visitantes Amoladeras (visitor centre) first.
