Amsterdam
Everyone agrees that Amsterdam is an exciting city, full of young people, street artists and late-night parties. But you can also have some peace and quiet right in the middle of the city. The Beguinage inner courtyard is a green oasis of tranquillity just a stone's throw away from the hustle and bustle of a shopper's paradise.
Amsterdam also immediately evokes images of high brick houses with stepped gables along the canals. The city was actually built on 100 different islands. In order get a good view of the Dutch capital, you simply must go on a boat ride. Amsterdam is also a city of world-famous museums: the Rijksmuseum (National Museum for Art and History), the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank Museum.
Leave the car at home. The best way to travel into town is by train. Fast Thalys trains also arrive in Amsterdam. The inner city is semi-pedestrianised and small-scale and therefore very pleasant. All places of interest are at a 15-minute walk from the Central Station. Would you like to go shopping or do you prefer a visit to the red light district? This city break file tells you all you need to know.

The red light district is not dangerous
Despite what some people assert, you can have a nice walk through the Red Light District without being harassed. Of course, don’t do it as a woman alone, but for a couple or a group it can be fun.

Boats are expensive everywhere
A boat tour on Amsterdam’s canals is of course not cheap, but is essential to get a good view of Amsterdam. Prices are almost the same everywhere, one might cost an euro less but then the quality of the trip is also lower.

Avoiding queues at the Anne Frank museum
On our first day in Amsterdam, the queue at the Anne Frank museum was around 1 hour. The day after, we came 15 minutes before the opening of the museum. We then waited for half an hour. It was really worthwhile.
