Algarve
The landscapes of Portugal are very diverse and often have their own particular climate. The Algarve is a prime example. In this most southern part of Portugal, the ocean carved out a masterpiece of rock and sand. North-African winds ensure most days are lovely and warm. Add some golden beaches and you have the perfect holiday mix. The Algarve's main sources of income are fisheries and tourism, so expect a lot of fish on the menu. You can enjoy sardines cooked on a grill out on the street. When you take a walk near the beach at night, you will see many lights of boats out at sea trying to surround and catch shoals of fish.
The chimneys of the Algarve are unique. They are one of the attractions of the countless small and traditional villages along the coast or inland. You will also be charmed by the gorgeous landscapes of wooded hills surrounded only by the peace and quiet of the countryside.

The turbulent sea in Algarve
What could be nicer than a little boat trip along the rugged coastline of the Algarve? At least that’s what we thought. A quiet day, little wind, we would leave for the whole day, with barbecued sardines on the beach for lunch. How’s that for romance? But after a while on the sea, we had another feeling. The sea along the Algarve is very rough. People who are prone to seasickness should really avoid it, even if you follow the coastline. Because it’s the place where the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea flow into each other, there are a lot of waves, even when the weather is calm. We really didn’t enjoy the experience.

There is nothing to see in Algarve
It is very clear that an earthquake took place here and devastated everything. A few churches, several pretty villages and lots of sardines. It was a real disappointment. Next time, we’ll go to the Costa Estoril, there is a lot to see there: Sintra, Lisbon and not so far away, many monumental edifices. Algarve is only for sun freaks and golfers!

Make a day trip to Lisbon
There is a new toll motorway that’s been built between Faro (Albufeira) and Lisbon, approximately 250 km. With a rental car, which are rather cheap in Algarve, you can leave early in the morning and come back only at night. This actually leaves the opportunity for you to see all main sights in Lisbon. It’s quite a small city where everything lies within walking distance. Only the Oceanario is located outside of the city, on the site of the Expo ’98.
